Mime Radio Show
Joan Merwyn is an award winning performing artist, educator, choreographer and stage director. Her approach is a unique integration of contemporary mime, physical acting and experimental theater. She has appeared from San Francisco to Montreal, from Eastern to Western Europe, from site-specific locations, to colleges, international performance festivals and opera houses.
Reflecting over 40 years experience, Joan has trained and worked internationally with some of the greatest influences in contemporary physical theater. As a choreographer/director her work has been seen on international television, including The Tonight Show and Great Performances.
Joan has implemented physical theater as a healing force in the extended NYC community since 1983. Her workshops, performances and residencies include populations who have a lot to say, but seldom have the opportunity to express themselves creatively; these include people in homeless shelters, mentally challenged adults, developmentally and cognitively challenged people of all ages. She holds an Eleanor Roosevelt Community Service Award for her work with homeless youth. She currently is an Arts in Education Coach, offering professional development training for NYC school teachers.
Joan believes that the arts must be accessible to all people in order to evolve a rich, multicultural society. Arts-in-education and community based production work is an important foundation of her work.
