Mime Radio Show
“American Mime is a complete theatre medium defined by its own aesthetic laws, terminology, techniques, script material and teaching methods. Basically, it is a medium for non-speaking actors who perform, in characterization, the symbolic activities of American Mime plays through movement that is both marvelous and beautiful.”
-Paul J. Curtis (Founder of The American Mime Theatre)
As a child, Erica Sarzin-Borrillo was enraptured by the beauty of the ocean and the lush surroundings of the East coast where she grew up. Her mother was an artist and she says, “I was gifted from the start with a ready-made muse.” Her career began as an actress and singer, and as a member of The American Mime Theatre. She writes: “What I learned under the mentorship of Paul J. Curtis was invaluable. It set me on the path of a Renaissance life that led to acting, circus arts, jewelry making, painting, costume design and writing.” Throughout her career it has been her mission to make a connection soul to soul, whether it be through visual or verbal means.
Our second guest, Marc Maislen has been an active Mime, Actor, Writer and Director for over 50 years. He abandoned his Pre-Med studies to dance in New York City with such notables as Martha Graham, Robert Joffrey, Alvin Nikolais, Lynn Simonson and others. When he was exposed to American Mime in 1970, he fell in love with this art form that fused acting and movement: story-telling without words. It put before him a path of playwriting that enabled him to focus on both the technical and creative aspects of Art. After a career of performing and numerous college teaching engagements, he settled out West where he has devoted the past two decades to his company New Vision Arts, where he is director, designer and teacher.
