Hilary Chaplain

By the age of 10 Hilary Chaplain knew she was destined for the stage. Her first show outside of elementary school was an avant-garde experimental theatre piece, so when she encountered Tony Montanaro in the late 70’s she was already primed. Her career has included “legitimate” theatre, mime, clown, physical theatre, puppetry, a sweet stint on Broadway in The Tempest with Patrick Stewart directed by George C. Wolfe. Besides studying off and on with Tony Montanaro at the Celebration Barn, she studied in Paris with various mime teachers along with noted master clowns throughout her career. Her solo show, A Life In Her Day, has taken her to over 20 countries and her most recent piece, The Last Rat of Theresienstadt, a play with puppetry, projections and music, is currently being booked for performances. She continues to work with The New York Goofs (not so often these days) and was a hospital clown for the Big Apple Circus Hospital Clown Program for 24 years. She teaches Clown, Physical Comedy and Hospital Clown and her background in Mime is a core part of who she is as a performer and teacher.
