Mime Radio Show
Denise Jones, Jackie Gordon and Peter Kaufman
In 1974, at Hillcrest High School in Queens, New York, the administration hit upon a brilliant way to inspire a diverse learning environment – a learning module called “Theatre Careers” and, more specifically, a deep dive into the art of Mime. The course was so popular that a touring mime company was formed called “The Mimestrals” directed by Peter Kaufman.
“We met every weekend, had long grueling rehearsals where he taught us the art and skill of mime,” recalls former member Denise Jones. “We were a mixed group, black, white, Latino. We wore white face, black leotards, performed without speaking – and people loved us. We were like celebrities. As big as the basketball team!”
Over its 14 year existence, The Mimestrals presented over 140 performances and workshops across the 5 boroughs of NYC, as well as Long Island and Westchester county. Company members were encouraged to remain in the troupe even after their graduation and the ensemble became an independent not for profit touring company and grew to 16 performers and 3 stage managers.
Director Peter Kaufman told us about “the pleasure of leading a company that felt like family, a group of young adults that stayed loyal and committed to the art of mime, and to that unique camaraderie that fostered a true sense of accomplishment. Those young adults now range in age from 55-65!”
