Thomas Leabhart
Thomas Leabhart is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities and practitioners of Decroux technique.
After growing up in Pennsylvania Amish country and Florida, graduating from college, Tom received a Fulbright grant to study with Etienne Decroux in Paris for 1 year. For 3 more years he continuing working as Decroux's teaching assistant and translator, and eventually returned to the US to teach at various schools including the University of Arkansas, Ohio State University, and the influential Valley Studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Tom began teaching at Pomona College in 1982 and continued there for 40 years.
At Pomona, he directed student actors, authored 4 books; founded-edited-published 30 issues of Mime Journal; toured internationally to Europe, Latin America and Asia with 5 one-person presentations, and taught Decroux technique in Europe and Latin America with Eugenio Barba's ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology). Tom hastens to add that none of this would have been possible without his wife of 51 years, Sally, whose invaluable work contributes to his theatre pieces and publications in every aspect.
