David and Masha Dimitri
David Dimitri is internationally acclaimed for his unique style of tightrope dance.
Combining an education at the State Academy for Circus Arts in Budapest with intensive dance studies at New York’s renowned Juilliard School, David Dimitri has created virtuoso wire dances celebrated at circuses, arts festivals, and concert halls throughout the world – Canada’s Cirque du Soleil, New York’s Big Apple Circus, the Swiss National Circus Knie, and the Metropolitan Opera under the direction of Jean-Pierre Ponelle, to name just a few.
In 2007 David Dimitri’s remarkable performing career took on an added dimension. With the invaluable assistance of his father, the famed clown Dimitri, he created the one-man-show “L’Homme Cirque,” a sparkling presentation of Nouveau Cirque arts both intimate and compelling, performed in a touring circus tent designed and built for the production.
David Dimitri has been a guest artist at such prominent festivals as Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina; Lincoln Center Festival New York; Just pour Rire, the Avignon Festival. In addition, he is never far from the high wire – most memorably in 2005, when he christened the new Frankfurter Waldstadium with a spectacular crossing. David Dimitri performed on Broadway’s New Victory Theater with the Family show, “La Famiglia Dimitri.” Amongst many other projects, for example flying an airplane as a FAA private pilot, David Dimitri is managing the Dimitri Cultural Center in Verscio, Switzerland together with his brothers and sister.
Masha Dimitri began performing in Circus Knie as a child together with her father, Dimitri Clown, and her siblings. She trained as a professional artist with the primary focus of slack rope at the Circus School in Budapest (HUN). After two years she transitioned to the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Verscio to study Physical Theatre.
Her first engagement with her slack rope act took her to San Francisco (USA) with the Pickle Family Circus. This was followed by world-wide engagements with Cirque Gruss, Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus New York (USA), Circus Knie and Compagnia Teatro Dimitri, in Switzerland. She has also celebrated international success during several years with her solo programs "Rehearsal Space" and "Fil Rouge" as well as the piece "Upside Down" in duo with Kai Leclerc (all three - directed by Dimitri Clown). She has acted as an actress and musician together with Dimitri in "Centovalli-Centoricordi" - a theatrical journey in Centovalli, Ticino, (directed by Livio Andreina) - and created the musical-circus children's play "Maestro Charivari" together with João Carlos Pacheco as part of the Young Lucerne Festival 2015. In the summer of 2016, she performed with her father in the open-air theater "Sogni di un'altra Vita" on the Monte Verità in Ascona (directed by Livio Andreina). This was followed by the premiere of her latest solo program "La Coeurdonnière", a clownesque play without words (directed by Yves Dagenais).
For over twenty years Masha Dimitri has also worked as a director and choreographer. She has assisted Dimitri as choreographer and assistant director in various Circus Monti programs (1998, 1999, 2001 & 2004) and has directed various variety shows for the Accademia Teatro Dimitri as well as several times for the Compagnia Teatro Dimitri.
She has also directed, together with the family, the three family shows "La Famiglia Dimitri", "DimiTRIgenerations" and currently "La Famiglia Dimitri 3," performing herself as artist and musician in the first two. For Circus Monti she is directing for the second time after 2007 - this time together with Faustino Blanchut.
